Indigo Slam by Smart Design Studio received the ultimate prize, beating a shortlist of almost 200 designs.The project, located in the Sydney suburb of Chippendale, also took out an award in the Residential Design category. Paramount by The Office Space by Woods Bagot and First Peoples by Museum Victoria Design Studio, both of which received the prestigious Award for Interior Design Impact.

Senic launches new smart light, Covi

Senic, the makers of Nuimo have come up with a new smart product of lights called Covi. It is a speech-enabled light that promises to automate your home by working with Alexa. The product combines designer lighting with AI capacities. Based on the look of a kerosene lamp, it features a little knob on the base which would’ve previously been used to regulate the flow of oil. But today, it’s been modernised into a dimming switch that allows you to control how warm or cool the white LED light of the Covi glows.

VisualCommerce offers a platform to virtually manage your walls

While 3D virtual design applications allow you to customise furniture units, the new VisualCommerce allows you to customise your walls. The app allows shoppers and designers visualise their wall-mounted decor purchases in context. It offers retailers of home decor, window treatments, art, mirrors and wall-mounted lighting fixtures solutions. The augmented reality visualisation works with Android, Microsoft Surface and Amazon Fire OS in addition to iOS devices

Library Design Awards 2017 winners announced

Library Design Awards 2017 by The Australian Library and Information Association was awarded in Melbourne. Winners were awarded across a number of categories related to library design, including public, school, academic and ‘special’ libraries. Five libraries came out on top from a list of 33 entries. The award for the Public Library category went to the City of Perth Library by Kerry Hill Architects, which was designed with dedicated floors to target different demographics. The judging panel took a wide range of factors into consideration when deciding the winners of the inaugural Library Design Awards like the designers’ objectives, the community response, value for money, budget,  a new build or a refurbishment, innovation and quality of the design, etc.

Julliard’s first overseas campus to be designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Diller Scofidio + Renfro have revealed designs for its new Juilliard School, the first overseas campus of the school. The project breaks ground in Tianjin, China. Julliard has previously topped design charts for their New York campus. While delivering some of the best facilities in the making of specialised artists, Julliard’s emphasis on design has born fruit. The school will have the main concert hall, a recital hall, a black box theatre and a music library. These spaces will be connected by a series of bridges that will have the school’s classrooms and practice facilities.

Renderings of renovation of the New York Penn station revealed

The project will consist of a 255,000-square-foot new terminal for the Long Island Railroad and Amtrak. This will increase the Penn Station’s total concourse floor space by more than 50 percent. An additional 700,000 square feet will be developed for commercial, retail and dining spaces to create a new mixed-use civic space for West Manhattan. Designed by original Penn Station architects McKim, Mead and White as a sister to the grand train hall, the Farley Building will see its core turned into a light-filled train hall meant to evoke the look and feel of its long-demolished partner.

Nigeria lifts ban on Egyptian furniture

The Egyptian Minister of Industry and Trade, Tarek Kabil, announced that Nigeria has lifted the ban it imposed on Egyptian furniture imports since 2005. Egypt has been discussing the same with Nigeria in many forums. The Egyptian Commercial Service conducted in Geneva along with delegates from the World Trade Organisation of Nigeria expressed their concern over the ban. The forum was appropriate as the ban was in contradiction to the World Trade Centre’s regulation policies. The ban was imposed on 25 other items from the Egyptian market and has badly affected traders since then. 

Danish brand reform to feature hacked IKEA products

Danish brand reform that specialises in customising IKEA’s Metod and kitchen cupboards has collaborated with Note Design and Afteroom to create new products. The brands together will work on customising a range of sideboards in the Scandinavian style. These two brands being prominent names in the Scandinavian design space make for the perfect partners for this project that requires expertise in the idea of minimalism. The colour scheme of the hacked product will reflect the classic palette of the Scandinavian muted tones. Recently, Reform also collaborated with Henning Larsen and Norm to reproduce Danish design.

High Sand Prices Stall real estate projects in Tamil Nadu

The rising sand prices are posing a problem for real estate projects in Tamil Nadu.The unavailability of manufactured sand is another problem adding to this. While some builders are willing to shell out more for river sand, the others are awaiting government intervention. The unavailability of sand has stopped work for governmental as well as private project constructions. The river sand price has gone up almost 98%.Projects covering 10 million sq ft have been stalled so far.
