Kone Corporation Wins The Order For Building Riyadh’s Metro

KONE Corporation, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry has won the order to supply 418 elevators and escalators for the line 3 of Riyadh Metro in the capital of Saudi Arabia, which is commissioned by Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA).

KONE will equip Riyadh’s metro line 3, which is the longest out of the 6 lines in the project stretching along a 41km spread across 22 stations. The order will comprise 262 KONE escalators and 156 KONE elevators of which 96 will be scenic. The solutions will be equipped with KONE E-Link monitoring systems.

Recognising Riyadh as the center of fast-paced infrastructure developments with its metro being one of the world’s biggest infrastructure projects, Pierre Liautaud, Executive Vice President for KONE South Europe, Middle East and Africa takes pride in partnering on a project that fulfills “the demands of” Riyadh’s commuter base.

Having booked the order in the fourth quarter of 2016, the line is expected to be in operation by the end of this decade. 

The Selected Artistic Directors Of 2018 Venice Biennale Win The 2017 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medals!

Yvonne Farrell and Shelly McNamara, directors of Grafton Architects, have been recognized along with three other individuals as winners of the 2017 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medals. The award, presented by the University of Virginia and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, honours “the exemplary contributions of recipients to the endeavors in which Jefferson excelled and held in high regard”, including Law, Citizen Leadership, Global Innovation, and Architecture.

“As founding partners of Grafton Architects, Farrell and McNamara have built an international award-winning practice that has made substantial contributions to culture and education and have embodied their values in profound works of architecture,” said Ila Berman, dean of the University of Virginia School of Architecture.

This is the third honor received by Farrell and McNamara this year, having already been selected as the artistic directors of the 2018 Venice Biennale, as well as winning the inaugural RIBA International Prize for Grafton’s Engineering and Technology University (UTEC) in Lima. 

This Italian Fashion House Dives Into The Home Design Space!

This January, Etro, the fashion brand best known for its paisley prints, moved deeper into the home space with a collection of wallpapers. The fashion house already offered select home products including bedding, pillows, and fabric, but its latest addition marks a larger leap toward decor.

The wallpaper line, crafted in collaboration with German manufacturer Rasch, comprises four designs and a handful of coordinating solids, all of which are adaptations of Etro's textile prints, resized and rendered in slightly more muted palettes than the brand's fashion and home accessory offerings. The launch is largely the brainchild of Jacopo Etro, son of Etro founder Gerolamo and the brand's current creative director of accessories, leather, home, and textiles.

Osram & Beaconsmind Ag To Launch Their ‘einstone Smart Retail’ App At The Euroshop Trade Fair

Osram reports that it has concluded its collaboration and partnership with beaconsmind AG, the first iBeacon full-service provider based in Switzerland. beaconsmind AG will present the Einstone solution portfolio using Osram LED lighting at the EuroShop trade fair from March 5 to 9, 2017.

Osram and beaconsmind are granting retailers a glimpse into their technological future with the ability to deliver personalized direct marketing, in addition to offering detailed analyses and integration of sales channels. Retailers can now achieve this technological potential in their shop environment thanks to “Einstone Smart Retail.”

The solution package uses LED lighting equipped with an iBeacon visual light communications chip that makes LED fixtures act like location beacons. Each luminaire transmits data about its particular location within the store. An Einstone app on customer smartphones translates digital photos of the LED lighting above into data about where the customer is located within the store. Additionally, the app also tracks the customer’s previous purchases, store items in stock and their locations on the shelves.

The company's fourth-quarter earnings report showed impressive growth through their statistics stating decor-lovers flocking to HomeGoods in herds, scooping up everything from servingware to wall art.

To capitalize on their winning retail formula and to tap on the “significantly underpenetrated” US home market, TJX Cos. President and CEO, Ernie Herrman just announced the launch of their new home concept store similar to HomeGoods in the upcoming year. Based on the company’s earnings, Mr. Herrman remains confident of their customers accepting the new brand with open arms. In the meantime, the company plans to add even more HomeGoods stores this year while also opening four new-format home concept stores. 

Oma To Design The Next Mpavilion, Australia!

Founder Rem Koolhaas and Managing Partner David Gianotten of Dutch firm, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) will design the fourth annual MPavilion. Commissioned by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, the 2017 MPavilion will be OMA’s first completed project in Australia.

Located in Melbourne’s historic Queen Victoria Gardens, the MPavilion serves as a design and cultural laboratory that hosts talks, workshops, performances, and installations that are free and open to the public from October to February. The announcement of OMA’s commission comes shortly after the closing of the 2016 MPavilion – a wooden structure by Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai. OMA’s design details are still under wraps, as their pavilion will open only on October 3, 2017.

“We are excited to design a cultural heart for [Melbourne]—a space of public engagement that will spark creativity and discussion, and that will act as a theatre for ideas,” Koolhaas and Gianotten remarked in a joint statement.
