The Grand Théâtre De Québec To Get Glass Casing As Part Of Preservation Effort.

Apr 11, 2017

Glass Casings by the architects Lemay and Atelier 21 was selected as the winning solution to preserve the deteriorating concrete envelope of the The Grand Théâtre de Québec. It is the largest innovative conservation project taken up by the government of Canada with an estimated cost of 16 million dollars. This glass case seeks to provide a protective casing around the iconic structure by Victor Prus which dates back to 1971. Over time, the freezing and thawing of the structure had caused the metallic anchors to rust which in turn left the cement panels exposed and the risk of collapsing. The solution seemed a perfect fit to protect the external murals by Jordi Bonet as well as respect Prus’ vision of the structure. The glass casing will have a gap in its set up so as to add features like climate control and ventilation to protect the cement sheets. The work is set to start in the first half of 2017 up to late 2018.
