Walk Along the Line- A Group Art Exhibition

Oct 23, 2017

Walk along the Line attempts to reflect 3 journeys in shared space and time presenting works of three contemporary women artists, featuring works on paper and canvas expressed sensitively, exploring various media like charcoal, graphite, ink, oil and acrylics. The participating artists are Neeraja Divate, Gitanjali Kashyap and Ritu Mehra. In her charcoal and graphite drawings, artist Gitanjali Kashyap uses the subtle symmetry generated by rhythmic movements in creation. She unites schematic geometric forms to create changing fields of visions often by the use of repeat imagery and austere monochromatic abstraction. She believes in the potentialities of visual texture which is usually a very significant element of the artwork. Artist Neeraja Divate’s works are based on the underlying philosophy “Details create the big picture” - says Neeraja Divate. The work is textured as a result of pressed effect on an empty space in a determined direction with delicate strokes that bring to the forefront the concealed layers of one’s personality. According to her, texture reveals the personality and individual technicality of the artist and to her, it is a window to her own aesthetic experiences.Continuing along the same lines of thought, artist Ritu Mehra creates a textured surface on canvas, often with lines and marks that symbolize the infinite casual connections that make the microcosm of life. This weaving together of the subject and its context is quite like interlaced threads that render a fabric. Texture has a major role to play in her artworks. She considers herself a liberal experimenter and likes to create unique textures through various mediums. The show will be held at  Shridharini Art Centre, Triveni Kala Sangam, Mandi House, New Delhi – 1 from the 24th of October to the 2nd of November 2017.

’16’, a solo show by contemporary artist Sunaina Bhalla

Oct 17, 2017

Using the background narrative of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, Sunaina has deconstructed the characters of key women in these epics. These 16 women are examined through paintings, sculpture and installations, with the focus being on the relative balance between the three colours of black, white and red. it represents the three different emotions that are experienced – with the balance of the palette denoting degrees of the dominant emotion. About the artist: Sunaina is a contemporary artist of Indian origin, who lives and works in Singapore. Educated in India, she moved to Tokyo in the late 90’s and has spent the last two decades in various parts of north and south Asia. Having completed her formal education as a textile designer specializing in print, she chose to pursue an immersive education in the traditional art form of Nihonga in Japan, where she spent 5 years studying under Ohta-sensei of the Kyoshin-do school. Her work currently, revolves around the repetitive and ritualistic nature of gestures and their traces. She explores the transformative effects of the deliberate infliction of pain on the human body during the curative process of alleviating disease and decay. Using colour as a basis for exploration, she contemplates the various connotations of colour and its effect on the human psyche.
